Hero From Afar
Close by the Mersey River,
He sailed upon the Sumter
Yet now he lies forgotten here,
No cross or stone to bear his name
I salute thee Thomas Cuddy

Just out beyond the bar
A Charleston boy lies sleeping
The hero from afar.
This McGillicuddy son
And mighty Alabama
From whence he fired her gun.
Alone beneath the wave,
This Carolina sailor boy
With testament so brave.
Do any weep for him?
As he lies beneath the Mersey
Where light is ever dim.
Call Dixie now to task,
Remember all your heroes,
Is that too much to ask?
