The term "Copperhead" has been loosely used to describe Northerners during the War of Northern Aggression that were Confederate sympathizers. It has been reported that the name came from the practice of cutting the head of Liberty out of a copper penny (when they were still made of copper) and wearing it on the lapel of your coat as a protest against the arbitrary suspension of God-given liberties which was practiced by the Lincoln Administration. Most Yankees view us Copperheads with the same amount of mutual affection that Southern people feel for those they brand as Scalawags. However, Scalawags in the South co-operated with the Northern government for political and financial advantage for themselves. With the Copperheads it was different.. The majority of them did what they did out of a sense of idealism. The "Copperhead Movement" was far from perfect, but many of those involved in it suffered at the hands of the Northern government in one way or another for their beliefs and for their support for the South.
