The following speech was
given by President Davis at the dedication of the monument to General R.E.
Lee at Richmond, Va. "Robert Edward Lee, gentlemen, scholar, gallant
soldier, great general, and true Christian was born in Westmoreland county,
Va on January 18th, 1807. He was the youngest son of General Henry
Lee, who was familiarly known as "Light Horse Harry" in the traditions
of the war of the Revolution," (sic)....

to the communications from Major Thomas L. Brown which appeared in Richmond Dispatch, August 10, 1886 In view of the fact that great interest
is felt in the monument about to be erected to General Lee, and that many
are desirous that his war-horses should be represented in that" (sic) ....
"THE WEEK", of Canada contained the following interesting article by T.E. Moberly on Robert E. Lee suggested by the unveiling of his statue at Richmond."A ESTIMATE OF THE SOUTHERN LEADER BY A CANADIAN." On the 29th May, at Richmond, virginia, the French sculptor Mercie's equestrian statue of the immortal Lee was unveiled, the world need no monuments to perpetuate the unfading, memory of this gentle, noble, gifted man. So long as this Northern continent endures, the name, the genius, and the character of Lee shall wield detractors have crumbled into the dust" (sic)... ---------------------------
