On or before 5 August 1862, the day that Raphael Semmes left Liverpool, aboard the Bahama, on his way to take command of the Alabama, a "notebook" was purchased at

Thomas Walmsley, Stationers, 64 Castle Street, Liverpool, England.

This "notebook" was destined to become the

Journal of The Confederate States Steamer Alabama.
