Gideon Welles Letter to Commander N. Collins

 

NAVY DEPARTMENT, September 17, 1866.

SIR: The navalgeneral court martial before which you were tried at Washington, D.C., April 5th, 1865, found you guilty of violating the territorial jurisdiction of a neutral government and sentenced you to be dismissed from the Navy of the United States of America.
T he sentence of the court is not approved, and you will await the further orders of the Department.
